Walking Paths & Scenic Routes from the HoHo — A Practical Map-Led Guide

I use the hop-on hop-off bus as my moving basecamp: I hop off at a stop, unfold the map, and follow a short, walkable loop that reveals the best local detail. Below are eight tested paths (30–90 minutes) that pair perfectly with HoHo stops. Each route includes a quick timing estimate, what you'll see, photo notes, and a short "what to eat" suggestion.

How I use this guide

  • Pick a HoHo stop, choose a loop (30/60/90 min) and follow the map.
  • Keep your ticket handy: you can hop back on the next bus if you run out of time.

Tip: I always start with one short loop (30–45 min) to get my bearings, then commit to a longer one if I want to stay.

Quick route summary (at-a-glance)

Loop Time Best for
River Liffey Riverside 30m Photos, easy walk

Castle & Medieval Quarter 60m Museums & history
Phoenix Park Perimeter 60–90m Green space & views
Docklands & EPIC 45m Modern Dublin & museums

Route 1 — River Liffey Riverside (30 minutes)

  • Start: Custom House (HoHo stop)
  • Path: Walk west along the north quays to Ha'penny Bridge, cross and return along the south quays.
  • Highlights: Custom House façade, River Liffey reflections, Ha'penny Bridge shot.
  • Photo tip: Late afternoon for warm light on the water.
  • Snack: Coffee at a quay café — choose a table facing the river.
Time budget: 30 minutes — short and flat, stroller-friendly.

Route 2 — Trinity & Grafton (45 minutes)

  • Start: Trinity College (HoHo stop)
  • Path: Trinity's Front Gate → Long Room courtyard view → Grafton Street buskers → St. Stephen's Green quick loop.
  • Highlights: Book of Kells exterior, Georgian facades, street performers.
  • Photo tip: Use a 35–50mm lens for street portraits and architectural details.

Route 3 — Temple Bar Cultural Loop (45–60 minutes)

  • Start: Temple Bar (HoHo stop)
  • Path: Temple Bar square → cobbled lanes → Ha'penny Bridge → riverside walk back.
  • Highlights: Colorful doors, pub signs, live music.
  • Insider: Duck one street off the main square to find quieter food spots.

Note: This area is lively; if you want quieter photos, come early.

Route 4 — Castle & Medieval Quarter (60 minutes)

  • Start: Dublin Castle (HoHo stop)
  • Path: Dublin Castle courtyard → Chester Beatty Library → Christ Church → Dublinia (if open)
  • Highlights: Medieval architecture, manuscript galleries, cloistered spaces.

Museum tip

  • Chester Beatty is often overlooked and offers excellent short exhibits — allow 30 minutes.

Route 5 — Phoenix Park Perimeter (60–90 minutes)

  • Start: Phoenix Park (HoHo stop for the park edge)
  • Path: Short perimeter walk to Phoenix Monument and Papal Cross viewpoint.
  • Highlights: wide lawns, deer sightings (from a distance), parkland breathing space.

Practical

  • Bring a light jacket; open parkland can be breezy.

Route 6 — Docklands & EPIC (45 minutes)

  • Start: CHQ / Docklands (HoHo stop)
  • Path: CHQ → EPIC Museum (exterior) → Jeanie Johnston berth → Samuel Beckett Bridge photo stop
  • Highlights: Modern glass, river dock history, bridge lines.

Route 7 — Kilmainham Short Walk (60–90 minutes)

  • Start: Kilmainham Gaol (HoHo stop)
  • Path: Gaol tour → walk the industrial adjacent streets and find murals and heritage plaques
  • Highlights: powerful history, cooling industrial textures, quiet streets away from the tourist core

Route 8 — Custom House to Ha'penny Bridge (45 minutes)

  • Start: Custom House
  • Path: Walk east along the quays to Samuel Beckett Bridge, then west across Ha'penny Bridge for sunset photos
  • Highlights: bridge architecture, riverside cafés, evening reflections

My pocket walking checklist

  • Comfortable shoes
  • Portable phone charger
  • Small umbrella or hooded jacket
  • Water bottle

Sample micro-itinerary I use often

  1. 09:00 — Hop off at Trinity; do the Trinity & Grafton loop (45m)
  2. 10:00 — Hop back on and ride to CHQ; quick Docklands loop + EPIC exterior (60m)
  3. 12:00 — Lunch in Temple Bar and a short Temple Bar loop
This micro-itinerary mixes short walking loops with on-bus transfers to keep energy fresh while seeing the city in layers.

Final notes

Use the map image above as your visual index: each HoHo stop is a gateway to one or more pleasant walking loops. I prefer short loops early in the day and longer park or Gaol walks in the afternoon when I can linger.

Want me to expand any loop into turn-by-turn directions or export printable walk cards? Say which loop and I'll continue.
